Tamala Taylor and the Academy of Dance Studio is starting the twenty-sixth year of Business in Wooster Ohio. Tamala started her love with dance when her mother took her to her first dance lesson at Bettene Winch School of Dance where she had been taking classes and was also an assistant. Bettene was a great influence in Tamala’s decision to continue in her dream to pursue teaching, expressing yourself through the art of dance and being a role model for young people. Tamala has had great support from her Mom and Dad through advancement in her young years to obtain her goal. Her mother still helps at the studio and shows. Tamala also was very fortunate to have the support of her husband Ron Taylor and her three son’s (David, Scott, and Joshua) in continuing in helping with the business and participating in the recitals, performing, helping backstage, emotional support.
Tamala say she has been very blessed with wonderful students and parents who have helped in many capacities in studio, and recital improvements. Their continued support, kind words, and commitment are always appreciated and welcomed. It is like her extended family.
Tamala has been a dedicated member to Ohio Dance Masters since 1982. Within this organization, she has held an office position for 30 years including: director, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, President, chair of the Friendship Scholarship Fund, Young Title Scholarship Competition, Nomination Chair, and tabulator, and Delegate to the Dance Masters of America National Convention. Tamala was awarded Ohio Dance Master’s Member of the year for 2015. Tamala is the current Immediate past President of Ohio Dance Masters and holds the position on the Auditing Committee.
Not only has Tamala owned her studio Academy of Dance for 26 years, but she is also an active member of The Cecchetti Council of America. Within this ballet council, she plays an integral role as recording secretary and has been a member for approximately 26 years.
At Academy of Dance, Tamala has numerous students who take pride in completing the Cecchetti Ballet Examinations as well as performing in Ohio Dance Masters Competitions. Furthermore, Tamala and her students take great honor in performing a recital annually at The Wooster High School on June 9, 2018, curtain is at 2:00 pm.
Tamala takes great pride in working with the young people to help with in their journey in the appreciation of the art of movement, music, the talent and growth of others. Her students are her children an extension of her family. She enjoys the growth of each student not only in their growth of dance, but also as young adults. Some of Tamala’s students have studied the art of dance in college and have gone on and performed professionally and become instructors. Tamala enjoys being a part of their lives and loves hearing from them after they have moved on from the Academy of Dance Studio. Tamala has many second generation students. It is humbling to know that the first generation of the students think so highly of me and have fond memories of the studio that they want that experience for their children. That is what warms my heart and makes me so proud of being a part of their lives.
